Non-Alcoholic Beer After a Workout: Protein, Calories and Sodium
Marc Bennett
Non-Alcoholic Beverage Reviewer
Looking for a non-alcoholic protein beer? Here is the honest answer: dedicated high-protein NA beers are hard to find in Canada, and we do not have one in stock right now. Regular non-alcoholic beers list between 0 and 2 g of protein per can on their nutrition labels, which is very little next to a protein drink. What NA beer can offer after a workout is a cold, familiar drink with no alcohol and, for many of them, very few calories.
So we went through the nutrition labels of the beers we sell and kept nine that are in stock and worth a look after the gym, a run or a game: the lowest-calorie cans, the ones with the most protein on the label, and two with added vitamins. Every number below comes from the product's nutrition label, per 355 mL can unless noted. At the end, we add one drink that really is high in protein, so you can compare.

| Tuesday Brewing Paradisco Hazy IPA | 50 | 1 g | 5 mg |
| Corona Cero 0.0% | 60 | 1 g | 15 mg |
| Templ Golden Lager | 65 | 2 g | 14 mg |
| Erdinger Alkoholfrei | 130 (500 mL) | 2 g | 0 mg |
How We Picked These Beers
- Label data only: calories, protein, sodium, carbs and sugar come from each nutrition label. We make no health claims beyond what the labels say.
- In stock: every beer here was active and in stock at upsidedrinks.ca when we wrote this.
- A reason to be here: each one is either very low in calories, among the highest in protein, or has added vitamins.
- Ranked by calories: from the lightest can to the most filling one.
1. Partake IPA

Price: $2.79 / can / $16.99 / 6 / Buy Now
The lowest-calorie beer on this list. Partake brews it in Ontario with Cascade, Amarillo and Citra hops, and the label reads 10 calories, 2 g of carbs and 2 g of sugar per 355 mL can. There is no protein and no sodium on the label, so this is the pick when the goal is simply a cold, hoppy can that barely moves your calorie count.
Things We Like
- 10 calories: per can, the lowest here
- Made in Canada: by Partake in Ontario
- IBU 42: for a properly bitter IPA
2. Athletic Brewing Athletic Lite

Price: $3.49 / can / $17.99 / 6 / Buy Now
Athletic Brewing calls this its everyday brew, "brewed specifically for the sport of life". The label lists 25 calories, 5 g of carbs, 0 g of sugar and 5 mg of sodium per can. It is a light, dry lager style, so it suits anyone who wants a classic beer taste rather than a hop-forward one.

- 0 g sugar: per 355 mL can

4. Partake Lime Goserita

Price: $2.79 / can / $16.99 / 6 / Buy Now
A gose-style brew inspired by the margarita, made with lime juice, agave and sea salt. Sea salt is on the ingredient list, but the nutrition label reads 0 mg of sodium, so think of the salt as flavour rather than as a source of electrolytes. 30 calories, 5 g of carbs and 0 g of sugar per can.
Things We Like
- Tart and lightly salty: like a margarita
- 30 calories: and 0 g sugar
- IBU 5: for people who do not like bitter beer

A Canadian cerveza with lime and a hint of salt. Its bilingual Canadian label lists 45 calories, 5.1 g of carbs and 0.4 g of protein per can, and states that it is not a significant source of sodium or sugars. Like the Goserita, the salt is there for taste.
Things We Like
- 0.4 g protein: per can, from the label
- Short ingredient list: water, barley, hops, yeast and lime juice
- Under $3: at $2.99 a can
6. Tuesday Brewing Paradisco Hazy IPA

Price: $3.49 / can / $11.99 / 4 / Buy Now
A hazy IPA from Calgary with Citra, Eldorado and Azacca hops. Tuesday Brewing adds vitamin C and vitamin D, which are both on the ingredient list. Templ ties with Erdinger for the most protein of any beer here at 2 g per can, with 65 calories, 12 g of carbs, 1 g of sugar, 14 mg of sodium and 100 mg of potassium. Its label is written per 500 mL: 130 calories, 27 g of carbs, 18 g of sugars (0 g added), 2 g of protein and 0 mg of sodium. That is the most carbohydrate and sugar on this list, so pick it if you want a fuller, malty beer rather than the lightest one.
Things We Like
- 2 g protein: per 500 mL on the label
- 0 g added sugar: the 18 g of sugars come from the malt
- Wheat beer style: brewed in Germany
If You Want Real Protein: Trema Café Protein Pecan & Maple

Price: $5.49 / can (330 mL) / $20.99 / 4 / Buy Now
This is not a beer, but it shows the gap. Trema's ready-to-drink protein latte, made with milk and coffee, lists 20 g of protein per 330 mL can, with 170 calories, 9 g of sugar, 5 g of fibre and 270 mg of sodium. The best beer on our list for protein has 2 g. If protein is the goal, a drink like this does the job, and an NA beer is the social or thirst-quenching part of the evening.
How to Choose a Non-Alcoholic Beer After a Workout
- Counting calories: start with Partake IPA (10), Athletic Lite (25), Michelob Ultra Zero or Partake Lime Goserita (30 each).
- Want a little protein: Templ Golden Lager and Erdinger Alkoholfrei list the most at 2 g, then Corona Cero and Tuesday Paradisco at 1 g.
- Looking for electrolytes: none of these beers is an electrolyte drink by its label: sodium runs from 0 to 15 mg per can. Salt in the recipe (Goserita, El Camino) is there for flavour.
- Watching sugar: five of the nine list 0 g of sugar or not a significant amount, and the others stay at 3 g or less, except Erdinger at 18 g per 500 mL, none of it added.
- Read the alcohol line: Michelob Ultra Zero and Corona Cero are 0.0%. The others are under 0.5%, the Canadian limit for non-alcoholic beer.
