What drinking less didn't fix

by Simon Poulin

I've told you what changed. The mornings. The energy. The sharp head at hours that used to be foggy.

All true. I stand by every word.

Today, the other list.

What didn't change.

The promise

Somewhere along the way, this space started overpromising.

Drink less and you'll become someone new. Calmer. More patient. More organized. A better listener, a better partner, a better boss.

I cut way back. Nobody sent the new guy.

The list

I still stay up too late. Not drunk-late. Dumb-late. Tuesday, 12:40am, wide awake, reorganizing a spreadsheet nobody asked for.

I still check my phone first thing. Clear head now, sure. Straight into the inbox with it.

I still say yes to too much, then play tetris with the calendar. And lose.

I still get impatient. In lines. In traffic. In the second minute of anything slow.

I still convince myself one workout makes up for three missed ones.

Same guy. Better hours.

No awakening

The wellness version of this story has an arc. Hit bottom, wake up, become new.

Mine is flatter. I was fine. Then I was sharper. That's the whole arc.

Alcohol was never the author of my flaws. It was more like a tax on everything. Heavy some weeks, light others, always collected in the morning.

Stop paying a tax and you have more to work with.

You. The same you.

What the extra actually bought

Here's what the recovered hours and the clear mornings really did.

They didn't fix my patience. They gave me the energy to work on it.

They didn't organize me. They made the mess easier to see.

Sharper didn't mean calmer. It meant I notice faster when I'm not.

That's the honest version of the deal. Better tools. Same hands.

Why I'm telling you this

Because there's a trap in the overpromise.

If you cut back expecting a transformation, day 30 feels like a refund request. You didn't become new. You just became clear.

Clear is what you actually get.

It's also enough.

Drinking less fixed the drinking.

The rest was never the alcohol's fault.

Still mine. Still working on it.
